Were you stuck in a career rut? Were you riding high in your career field till the economic crash brought you crashing down? If that's your situation, what has happened has happened, so there's no need to cry over spilt milk. If you are wise, you will know that this is a unique opportunity to assess where you are, what you want and how you want to move forward in your life.
Instead of being unhappy and groaning about the job loss. Take the time to think about your real feelings about the job you were relieved of. Did you really love the job or was it just a pay check to pay your bills? Or were you in a career your parents, partner or life chose for you? If your previous career isn't what you wanted deep down and you believe you are designed to do something else, let me be the first to congratulate on the first day of the rest of your life heading in the right direction. Be thankful that you didn’t have to work another day at a job you know you were not designed to do, didn't love and feel any passion for. Don't think I'm crazy for congratulating you as you stare at the pile of bills staring you in the face daring you not to pay them. I'm not crazy, but I'm absolutely thrilled for you.
I know as you think about your bills a wave of anxiety flowed through you. Don’t despair; it is well. Life has thrown you lemons, so make lemonade by looking around you for what you can do that's in line with your life’s calling, which means doing what you were designed to do, which is often something you will gladly do for free. This is the time to stop doing what others want or expect you to do. Do what you want to do deep down in you.
A big house, expensive clothes and getting good at spending money will not make you happy. Following your life's calling and fulfilling your dream will make you have. Staying at a job you are miserable will will only leave you broke, deep in debt and miserable. To some people a career stands for financial security, but reality is that with down sizes, restructuring, outsourcing and companies doing more with less, chances are your “secure” job isn’t so secure. So this is the perfect time to live your dream.
Questions to ask Yourself:
What is your dream?
Decide what you want to do, and what you were designed to do?
What are you prepared to sacrifice to attain your dream career?
What resources do you have available to you that will help you attain your dream career?
Reality Check/Things To Know:
Some people around you may not understand your reasoning. However, you don’t have to justify your career move to anyone, except to the people helping you financially.
Changing careers is not easy but your desire will help you through the process.
No matter your age when you start a new career, you are starting all over again from the lowest rung of the ladder, unless you have the money to start your own business and even with that you will still need to be trained for it.
Read, sign up for a class, practice and volunteer to get training.
Look for the job you always wanted but realize you are starting from the ground up, so take a small job or a part-job in the field first to learn the training, information and skills needed in the new career field.
Realize you have to build up your resume like a person who just graduated from college or high school. Realize you will be in competition with new graduates, which can be good and bad. These new graduates may be what some companies want and they won't touch you with a 10ft pole. Some companies will love you for your wealth of experience and wisdom in other areas of life that you can bring to your position.
Find a way to make a bridge from where you are to where you desire.
When you are in the career field you were designed for, you will be really content and happy even though you may not be making as much money as you'd like or were used to. As the saying goes, Money isn't everything and health is wealth (physical & mental) and if you are happy and healthy in your desired occupation, you are much better off than being depressed in another well paying position you dread. You will be a much happier person doing something you love and were designed to do instead of forcing yourself to do something you were not designed to do, have no passion for and totally hate doing just because you get a couple of coins from it. Kapish?
