Movie: Middle of Nowhere

Middle of Nowhere is the Sun Dance Film Festival 2012 Best Director Award winning film, which tells the story of a family struggling to stay connected while a loved one is in prison. When her husband is sentenced to eight years in prison, Rudy drops out of medical school in order to focus on her husband's wellbeing while he's incarcerated - leading her on a journey of self-discovery in the process.

The movie sheds light on another "fleecing" of America issue and the money mills many American prisons have become. We know that many prisons now don't serve as corrective institutions, they are run by companies whose sole purpose is to make money any way they can. Among many unnecesary issues inmates experience, across the US, many incarcerated Americans are subjected to excessively high phone rates in many states. A 15 minute phone call home can cost families up to $71 thanks to the predatory phone rates allowed by the prison system. As we know, most of the people in jails are people of color, so it would behoove every person of color to watch this movie whether or not you know anyone in prison to understand how the American greedy and money focused prison system often works as a disservice the inmates and humanity.
