Most women can get pregnant and give birth, but some are not “maternal” even though biologically they are mothers. Not every woman has an innate maternal pull that makes them motherly, which is synonymous with being overly nurturing. Some say it's nature vs. nurture based on how they themselves were raised that they are able to develop the “mommy” gene, but I believe it is based on a woman’s temperament. For example, I have a very nurturing mother. However, I have one sister who is very nurturing just like her and one that is totally not, even though we all grew up together in the same home and were raised by the same mother. I don’t have kids yet, but I believe I am nurturing even though I’m not as nurturing as my nurturing sister, but I know I am not as non-nurturing as my non-nurturing sister.


Some women embrace motherhood. Others are ambivalent to it, while some are even scared and freak out at the thought of becoming mothers, which isn't a surprising reaction considering that motherhood is actually a huge and long-term responsibility. However, I believe everyone’s life is unique. God doesn’t make duplicate people because it would make a boring world, so women shouldn’t judge or compare themselves to others because that can divide people. We are all different and some people are more maternal than others, but if you have or don’t have the “mommy” gene, you can be confident in being yourself, which is a human being with a defined destiny and divine purpose, which may or may not include being an overly nurturing mother.

Human behavior including motherhood is on a wide spectrum and different mothers do many things differently and play different roles in their children’s lives. Some women are made to be driven career women and this his will help teach their daughters what it takes to be a working woman or their sons how to relate to a hard working career woman. Some women are made to be home makers; this will teach their children how to be home makers or how to relate to home makers because of their exposure to her lifestyle. Some are made to be creative, which will expose their children the creative lifestyle. The list is endless of what we teach and learn from those around us especially mothers. Also mothers’ temperaments are teaching opportunities to prepare their children to deal with that type of personality before they are released into the world and encounter different people from all works of life with different temperaments.

So as long as we are mature enough to know that God in his infinite wisdom and with his good humor designed each and every individual for a specific reason and purpose and when we appreciate, don’t judge or compare ourselves to others, we will see that we do live in a wonderful world with many interesting kinds people…
