I have been looking for a reason to use products from Kimberly Lewis' wallcovering line since meeting her at Blogfest this year.  When I decided to switch directions with my business, I was afraid that I wouldn't get the chance because I wasn't sure if I'd be involved in residential design again this soon.  But as fate would have it, the first day of my new job (Monday) provided me with the opportunity to throw her wares into the mix.  Turns out, my very first project at my new post is a ranch house re-do.

When I got the images of the house on my desk, I noticed that the walls were all dark paneling and that the ceilings weren't very high.  I'm out of the painted accent wall phase, so I quickly started to think of alternative ways of making the walls special and the rooms appear larger.
Kimberly's wallcoverings seems like the perfect fit.  I think that they're fun, creative, and provide just the graphic punch our otherwise white color palette needs.  The easy part is recommending the paper, the hard part is fighting for it at every production meeting until I can see it successfully installed in the project.  Wish me luck!

What do you think?  Could you see this in a 30 year old ranch house?

A Perfect Place for A Scandal - Olivia Pope's Bedding

I couldn't help but notice the yummy duvet cover on Olivia Pope's bed during last week's episode of Scandal.  Since I am obsessed with all things Olivia Pope, especially the hugely inappropriate relationship she has with the President.  Who writes this stuff?  Of course I know and of course, I think she deserves an Emmy.  Anyhoo, back to...The bedding.   I know you want it and here's where you can get it.

It's the Embroidered Frame bedding from West Elm and guess what?   It's on sale!  I know, I know!  I've seen this bedding and held it in my hands and ladies believe me, it feels as good as it looks.  I think we should all take it home and create our own little perfect place to roll around and have... well, lonely nights thinking about our ex boyfriends. :)  What?  That's what Olivia does.
Quick little side note.  If you are feeling really bossy or should I say presidential, have it monogrammed.I would.

Hello Everyone,I've missed you guys!  If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, then you know that I have been all over the place. In my travels I've run into several interesting Pinkeggshell followers.
One of the followers and I sat down for coffee on Monday and she shed some light on how I blog and what she feltpeople were looking for when they read my blog.  (I know right.)  I thoughtabout it for a few days, with my first instinct being not to worry about it too much.  However, the conversation stayed on my mind and this blog post is my response.
It's a design blog, so why don't we see more behind the scenes design stuff?
Social media moves quickly, design projects not somuch.  I'm always torn between how much I share with you about any givenproject because the reality is that they are all over the place.  For instance,I was slap dab in the middle of doing phase one (the first level of my client'shouse), when the couple became pregnant and we had to switch our focus to thenursery.  I posted some images from the completed rooms on Instagram, but have yet to finish and get in there to have the space professionally photographed.I also struggle with this because I believe that homes should evolve and include facets from the owner's life and travels.  I don't like generic art or random BS in a space.  I don't design in cliches so the spaces should mean something and creating meaning takes time.
We want more design business advice, especiallythose of us who are just getting into the business.

I'm hesitant to give advice because I feel thatalthough I've been in the business for over 10 years, I  am still perfecting several facets of the day to day operations.  I'm always evolving as I find ways to incorporate all the things that I love (Art, photography and travel) into my daily work.  I know what I am doing and what my goals are, but unless you are me or have similar goals it could be really hard to follow along.

I will pass this little tidbit along though:  I've been an entrepreneur my wholecareer.  I've learned to succeed as both a leader and a one woman show. I 've made a lot of mistakes, but I have survived because I work on keeping my overhead low.  Knowing how to survive and that this is my life's purpose keeps me movingforward and keeps me seeking better ways to not only run my business, but also my life.

We want better follow up on projects that you startlike the Top 20 or
Behind the Blog series.
Wow... Ouch! Well, I have tons of ideas!  I love ideas by the wayand sometimes the successes of those ideas depend on the cooperation ofothers.  I have some great features coming up but I am still looking at ways todo them more effectively.  Bear with me.  I am truly interested in this andwould love some input on ways to do it better.
Finally, More about me.I have a really unique and blessed life.  I am and have always been a really spontaneous person who adapts quickly to change.  I easily move from idea to idea and place to place without a lot of pondering or soul searching.  I live by the words of Jay-z "Don't talk about it, if you ain't lived it." I don't believe in faking it 'til you make it.  Often times I'm involved in projects that are not linear, but have many twists and turns.  For that reason, I like to share details about them once they're complete.

Personally.  I'm a little over the top - I love bling, labels, furs, and all things glamorous.  It can get a little obnoxious- I know this, but I love it!  Think Little Kim and Kanye and I'm not even joking. I love celebrating life.  I think that anyone who has spent even a small amount of time with me would say when asked about it, "We had a great time!" and little else.  In contrast to all the hype, I'm also kinda private.  I can be both right?

The UN-glamorous part about my life is that I'm almost always living between two orthree cities at a time.  As you can imagine, things can get hectic especially with a toddler in tow.  So I don'tpost a lot about the food I eat or the clothes I buy. I normally have both delivered to my home or  hotel.  It's a bonus when I can actually go into a mall to shop orinto a restaurant for dinner.  Sad, but true.

In an attempt tobe more of a resource for you because that's what I started this blog for, I will do mybest to be more transparent and more personal.  If I start a project and it ends up in the toilet, you'll read about it here.  In the meantime, please leave acomment and let me know what things you are waiting for from me that I haven't delivered.  Believe me, I wantto hear from you now before I run into you in the streets.

Bold, unique, and oh so well put together.  Who needs the king's horses and men?  His confidence is unbreakable and his impression lasts way past the first encounter with his individual style. From his hair, to the way he rocks his jeans, to his choice of furnishings, the Blue Satin Male takes pride in the value of his brand.  He is a connoisseur of design that reflects who he is and savors decor that conveys his story through the language of color, form, and texture.See the way he strokes his 5 o'clock shadow?  He is not afraid to be smooth, yet edgy.  He is multidimensional, and knows how to give and take with a flare for artful negotiation.  The Blue Satin Male likes to mix it up, creating swagger at home without losing one drop of authenticity.
I have had the pleasure to create exceptional spaces with many stylish men who exude the Blue Satin Male archetype.  As the inspiration for this site, it is my hope that the pictures and content curated here are a reflection of and an inspiration for all.Check out images from recent blog posts after the jump.

My Celebration of Change

As I reviewed 2012, I noticed that it has been a year of changes.  I didn't enter 2012 thinking that I needed to make these changes, but I guess the universe knows best. :)  For one, I cut my hair.  I've always worn my hair short, but grew it out for TV.  We thought that it would make me appear to be more mainstream.  In the end, it really didn't matter.  I wanted to cut it so I did...super short and super chic.  What do you think?

If you've tried to contact me and could not or if you noticed that I was missing from social media for long periods of time this year, then you helped to influence change number 2.  After I returned from New York in May, I had the worst luck with my Internet connection!  I just could not get and keep a constant signal.  I tried absolutely every service out there, to no avail. It was the worst!  So in the end, I decided to move to another condo.  As I wrapped my mind around moving down the hall, I  decided to make an even bigger move.  I changed my bi-cities.  Instead of living between Houston and Atlanta, I've decided to live between Oxford and Houston.  I truly heart Atlanta, I do, but I believe that the opportunities outside the city are better for me and my family.  I'll miss my friends and the after work cocktail hours, but I'll be okay.

Not all of my changes were as major as switching cities.  One small but powerful change that I made was to change my homepage setting from Gmail.  This is the best thing I could have ever done.  I've heard it said that "email is an effective way of managing other people's priorities for your life."  Instead of turning on my computer and getting bombarded with that energy, I get news and business motivation that I can use.  This is, by far, a change that I would recommend to anyone.

My life is a lot bigger now than it was just a year ago.  The energy around me is fantastic!  My partnerships are stronger, my focus is sharper, and my future is brighter than ever.

2012 was an amazing time for me and was filled with some pretty cool firsts.  Here are a few things I'd like to raise a glass to and show gratitude for - if you don't mind.
  • My HGTV Episodes of "Design Wars" aired to rave reviews.  If you haven't seen them, you can catch them on repeat.
  • Pinkeggshell was named one of the Top 100 Design Blogs for 2013 by Modenus.
  • I am leading a delegation of talented designers from the African-American Top 20 to Curacao -
  • We successfully celebrated the African-American Top 20 Designers at Jay-Z's 40/40 Club in New York. {See event photos tabs above}
  • We successfully launched a design blog specifically for men called Blue Satin Male.
  • I gave my very first independent Key Note address at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center.
  • I curated a lovely collection for Joss and Main.com  that was a huge success.
All of those things are great, but more importantly, I'd like to celebrate meeting you. When I started this blog.  I simply could not have imagined just how much you would come to love it and I'd come to love you. You showed up in record numbers to my speaking engagements and supported all of my events. I love you for that. Thanks for all the love and all the support. It has meant the world to me.

I am absolutely ecstatic about life and all it's possibilities.  I care deeply about design and feel personally obligated to further the plight of all of you who are looking to make your mark in this profession.  My personal ambitions pale in comparison to the goals I have for my community.  Even now, as I celebrate a decade of Interior Design Success, I find myself thinking, "What else can I do?  How can I be better?  Where else can I serve?"

Please join me here in 2013 as we delve more into the home and what it means for a healthy happy life.  I'm looking forward to discussing this and much more with you in the new year.
Until then,
Happy New Year and Be Blessed!
-Kimberly
